Set up Focus on your Mac so it actually helps

Most people try Focus once, miss an important message, and never touch it again. Set it up properly and it’s one of the best things on a Mac.

One for each kind of time

Open System Settings › Focus and click Add Focus. Start from one Apple provides, like Work, or make your own with Custom. Do Not Disturb is always there.

Decide who and what gets through

In each Focus, Allowed People picks who can still reach you, and Allowed Apps which apps can still notify you. Turn on Time Sensitive Notifications so the urgent ones still arrive. Allow repeated calls lets anyone through who calls twice within three minutes.

Let it switch itself on

Under Set a Schedule, add a time (weekdays, nine to five), a place (the office), or an app (it switches on when you open Keynote and off when you leave it). You can pause a schedule without deleting it.

Focus filters

Focus Filters make apps show only what fits: Calendar just your work calendars, Mail just your work accounts, Messages only the people on your list, Safari a particular Tab Group.

Everywhere, and on in a second

Share across devices keeps your Focuses in sync with your iPhone and iPad. To switch one on, open Control Center, click Focus and pick one, for an hour or until the end of your current event. And Option-clicking the date and time in the menu bar turns Do Not Disturb on or off.

Tell your Mac’s helpers, too

A Focus silences notifications. SideDock goes along with it: the notch shows which Focus is on, and Pip holds its own notices until you’re done, then catches you up in one go.
